2017 World Rowing Championships is 365 days away at Sarasota’s Benderson Park
Sarasota government officials and community members joined together at the site of the 2017 World Rowing Championships to commemorate the regatta being only 365 days away, on Friday, September 23.
Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota-Bradenton, the site of the 2017 World Rowing Championships, hosted local leaders and U.S. Olympic gold medalist rower, Amanda Polk, to stress the significance of the event.
In addition, “Vortex,” a sculpture designed by internationally renowned artist, Malcolm Robertson, was unveiled with a time clock counting down the days to the Championships. FSF President John Webb and FSF Board of Directors representative Dr. Joanne Fava (pictured at left) attended the Countdown event in Sarasota.
“This is a very special day for our entire community,” said Max Winitz, the media and public relations manager for the 2017 Championships. “Malcolm’s artwork will remain at Nathan Benderson Park as a permanent legacy commemorating the biggest sporting event this area has ever seen.”
The Kick-off event gave attendees the opportunity to learn about purchasing tickets and official merchandise, volunteering and all of the exciting events and programs that will take place leading up to and during the Championships.
The World Rowing Championships will take place in Sarasota-Bradenton, September 23-October 1, 2017. With 40,000 in attendance and 1,700 elite, world class athletes on hand from more than 60 countries, Florida’s Suncoast is expected to see an economic impact of $25 million.
