Competition open to elementary, middle, & high schools

Does your school have an outstanding physical education teacher who has excelled in teaching students the importance of fitness, wellness, and living a healthful lifestyle? Does your school have an excellent wellness program that is making a difference in the lives of your students? If so, then nominate that teacher and/or your school for the Governor’s Wellness Challenge 2018.

Governor Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott are announcing the Wellness Challenge, which is supported by the Florida Sports Foundation. The competition is open to full-time P.E. teachers at all public and private elementary, middle, and high schools in Florida. Two teachers in each grade division will each receive a $1,500 prize. And two schools in each grade division will receive a $5,000 grant to be used for purchasing physical education equipment.

Video Submission Instructions

In order to submit a video all applicants must first upload their video to their personal YouTube page or channel.

School Awards Program

1. Eligibility – All public and private elementary, middle and high schools in Florida.
2. Nomination requirements –

  • Submit a video no longer than 10 minutes that highlights how you promote fitness, wellness, and a more healthful lifestyle:
    • for all populations, including students with disabilities, where applicable.
    • by incorporating best practices in physical education and nutrition.
    • both with and without fitness equipment through indoor and outdoor activities.
    • both at school and within the community (e.g., hosting a Health & Wellness Fair, promoting opportunities available through the local Parks & Recreation Department).
  • Submit a completed media release form for all students who appear in the video.
  • Submit a waiver form, signed by the school’s principal.

Physical Education Teacher of Excellence Awards Program

1. Eligibility – All full-time P.E. instructors in public and private elementary, middle and high schools in Florida.
2. Nomination requirements –

  • In 250 words or fewer, explain why you think this physical educator should receive the Physical Education Teacher of Excellence award.
  • Nominations may be submitted by a principal, teacher, parent/guardian, or student on the form provided.
  • Physical Education teachers who are nominated will be asked to submit additional documentation to the selection panel (e.g., yearly program scope and sequence, résumé and/or curriculum vita).

Awards Selection and Distribution

  • School awards – Two winning elementary (grades K-5), two middle (grades 6-8), and two high (grades 9-12) schools will be selected by a panel of school district representatives and wellness advocates throughout the state to receive $5,000 to purchase fitness equipment for their school.

  • Teacher awards – Two teachers in each category – elementary (grades K-5), middle (grades 6-8), and high (grades 9-12) school will be selected to receive a $1,500 prize.
  • Winning schools and teachers will be invited to attend a ceremony with the Governor and the First Lady in May 2018 to receive their awards.
